It was back in 1924 that Harold Fielding, opened The Harold Fielding Insurance agency in Worcester. His daughter Lois would tell stories of her father taking her up and down Water Street working on soliciting new clients. Harold’s diligence and hard work paid off and the agency flourished.
Flash forward to 1961, Harold hired his son-in-law Sumner Herman. Through acquisition and an expanded geographic focus, the one man Harold Fielding Agency evolved into Insurance Marketing Agencies, Inc.
In 1985, Sumner’s daughter Laura joined the firm, followed by her brother Peter in 1992. Since then, Laura and Peter have grown IMA into one of the largest independently owned insurance brokers in Massachusetts.
Client care is the bedrock on which IMA is built. CEO, Laura Herman stresses the importance of connecting with clients, “Taking an interest in my client’s dreams and aspirations, as well as their needs is very important to me, I want to support them in all of their ventures.” President, Peter Herman says “The first step in gaining client trust is to assess their needs and create a relationship.”
In a concerted effort to always move forward, technology has also played a significant role in shaping the agency. IMA employs the latest service technology to complement their hands-on approach and address client needs in today’s fast moving world. As the insurance industry keeps changing, IMA remains a step ahead.
IMA is a full service agency meeting the needs of businesses and families, large and small. The company has insured small startups that eventually became publicly traded companies and multi generation local families. IMA’s client retention rate is amongst the highest in the industry.
As the Herman name endured, so has the family culture. Lois Herman has often said of the staff, “having a family business affects your business, setting a standard that the client comes first.” Peter says of the company motto “Everyone is treated like part of our family.” Every employee of IMA is eager to go to great lengths to satisfy their customers, even on holidays. Peter recalled a time when he helped a client sort out an insurance issue at 11 pm on New Year’s Eve.
Peter often remarks that “My greatest pride is when a claim story turns out well, and the outcome exceeds the client’s expectations.” As for Laura, she considers herself a conduit, connecting clients to multiple options they may not know about. “Our grandfather taught us to listen first and be consistent.” she says. With over 90 years in the insurance world, IMA is more than ready to meet the challenges of the next 90 years and beyond.
